LBSU women picked 7th in preseason media poll

The Long Beach State women’s basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the nine-team Big West Conference by 25 media members in a preseason poll released Thursday.

The 49ers, who finished fourth in the Big West last season, received 84 points and finished ahead of just Pacific (51) and Cal State Northridge (42).

UC Davis received 16 first-place votes (210 points) and was picked to repeat as regular-season Big West champions. The Aggies are followed by: Cal Poly (183), UC Riverside (182), UC Santa Barbara (164), Cal State Fullerton (113), UC Irvine (96), LBSU, Pacific and CSUN.

The Big West also released the media’s preseason all-conference team: Kristina Santiago (Cal Poly), Mikah Maly-Karros (UCI), Paige Mintun (UCD), Alyssa Morris (UCR), Megan Richardson (CSUF), Mekia Valentine (UCSB).

Santiago will return as the reigning Big West Player of the Year.

LBSU will return just two starters from a team that compiled a 13-17 overall record, but a 9-7 mark in Big West play. Head coach Jody Wynn will have eight newcomers, including seven freshmen, on this year’s squad.

The ‘Niners will host Cal Poly Pomona in a 4 p.m. exhibition Nov. 6 at the Walter Pyramid. The Beach will open the regular season at Oregon State on Nov. 13, while the home opener is scheduled for Nov. 19 against Oregon.
