CSULB alumna to make a statement with jewelry

Cal State Long Beach alumna Casey Lum’s goal was to start a business before her 30th birthday. When she blows out the candles on May 24, she will have done just that.

Lum, who graduated in 2006, has created an online statement jewelry boutique, B. Poy & Jo, set to launch early this month.

The boutique sells statement jewelry pieces from about a 30 companies and also rents jewelry to students or other interested parties who might need the pieces for photoshoots or events.

“My idea is to also have a rental side for not everyday consumers and for those in the industry,” Lum said.

Lum said the majority of online websites that have jewelry don’t focus solely on statement jewelry, or bold, eye-catching pieces. Lum said the collections on the B. Poy & Jo website will consist of necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings.

“I didn’t find one place that was focused only on statement jewelry,” Lum said. “One important thing is that I also wanted it to be affordable to the public.”

Lum said that the prices range from $15 to $100, depending on the piece.

“For me, fashion is taken too seriously, and people should have fun with it,” Lum said.

When she was studying at CSULB, Lum double majored in fashion merchandising and fashion design. She said before she started her business, she traveled through the fashion industry until she found her niche.

“You need to learn to relate with every walk of life,” she said. “That’s what helped me in my business.”

Christina Wootton, the director of sales for Stardoll Media and a college friend of Lum, said Lum’s creativity can be seen on the B. Poy & Jo website.

“The talent shows up from pieces on her site,” Wootton said. “She has an eye for fashion. She can see someone and know how to style them with what would look good on them.”

Lum said that her new business is named after her grandparents, Bert Poy and Josephine Poy.

“They were an inspiration for everything,” Lum said. “I got my creativity from my grandma, and my grandpa always encouraged me to follow my dreams.”

She said that although her grandparents have passed, she is still encouraged by them.

Lum’s jewelry line and website are set to launch in the first week of May. More information on Lum’s website launch can be found at bpoyandjo.com.
