John Weber Named 2026 San Francisco Pride Community Grand Marshal
When San Francisco’s Pride parade selects its grand marshal, the city looks to a man whose life has been a living manifesto of service.
John Weber has been chosen as the 2026 San Francisco Pride Community Grand Marshal, a role that honors his long‑standing service to the city’s LGBTQ+ community. The selection followed a community‑driven process that included public nominations, voting, and board appointments. Pride will take place June 27‑28, 2026, under the theme “Resistance in Action.”
Weber’s journey began in childhood. He says he decided to serve his community at age eight, a choice shaped by his mother’s example in New Orleans. She organized rent‑party meals for neighbors during the 1960s, a practice that taught Weber the importance of collective support. The 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster further deepened his perspective; after the storm, the gay community in San Francisco rallied around him, providing travel assistance for family members.
His activism in San Francisco is closely tied to the Krewe de Kinque (KdK), a Mardi Gras crew that supports LGBTQ+ causes. Weber became King 7 of KdK and later served as Mr. Gay SF, the first Black elected emperor. In 2021 he was elected the first Black board chair of the Imperial Council of San Francisco, a position that oversees the city’s Imperial Court System.
Beyond public roles, Weber has practiced what he calls PMLE—Practice of Mindful Loving Engagement—for 15 years. He describes it as infusing the mind with positive thoughts and carrying the energy of ancestors who fought for gay and Black rights. According to Weber, this practice helps him “practice love the way some people practice music—daily, deliberately, and with devotion.”
Kippy Marks, a San Francisco performer and writer, highlighted Weber’s influence in a recent column. Marks credits Weber as a mentor during her liver‑transplant recovery, noting that he “walked with her” and provided a community lifeline. Marks’ column, the 17th in a series spotlighting community leaders, frames Weber as a quiet but powerful bridgebuilder.
Weber’s current focus includes mentoring young LGBTQ+ people and encouraging them to share full stories—joy, loss, racism, and resilience—so that future generations understand the breadth of the community’s experience. He advises against accepting subtle forms of exclusion, such as being told “you belong here” or “stay in your lane,” and urges people to keep their dreams in their own hands.
The 2026 Pride Parade will feature a diverse lineup of participants, including the newly selected organizational Grand Marshal, TransThrive, a part of the San Francisco Community Health Center. The event will also host a golf tournament and a human‑rights summit, underscoring the city’s commitment to advocacy and inclusion.
Weber’s appointment as Grand Marshal highlights the enduring legacy of LGBTQ+ activism in San Francisco. His decades of service, leadership in KdK and the Imperial Court System, and his personal practice of mindful loving engagement embody the community’s resilience and capacity for collective action.
The next steps for Weber involve leading the Pride Parade on June 28, 2026, and continuing his mentorship and advocacy work throughout the city. His story remains a testament to the power of sustained, compassionate service in building stronger, more inclusive communities.
