San Diego Freeway Shooting Leaves Woman Hospitalized; Suspect Arrested

A quiet Thursday evening on San Diego’s freeways turned into a scene of violence when a driver fired shots at a passing vehicle, leaving a woman hospitalized and a suspect in custody.

According to Officer Jared Grieshaber of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the shooting happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. on the transition ramp that links eastbound State Route 52 to southbound Interstate 15. A black 2025 Ford Explorer, carrying two adult women and a seven‑year‑old child, was struck by gunfire. The shooter, behind the wheel of a gray Volkswagen Passat, fled the scene.

CHP detectives from the Border Division Major Crimes Unit later identified the suspect as Zian Wayne Aldrich, 27, of Coalinga, California. Aldrich was taken into custody on Friday and booked on suspicion of three counts of attempted murder and two weapons‑related charges. He is being held without bail at the San Diego Central Jail, with an arraignment scheduled for Tuesday.

“Violence on our freeways endangers innocent lives and will not be tolerated,” said CHP Assistant Chief Andrew McCulloch. He added that detectives acted swiftly to locate and arrest the suspect, underscoring the agency’s commitment to holding those who threaten the traveling public accountable.

The CHP reminded motorists that confronting an aggressive driver can be dangerous. Drivers should create distance, avoid eye contact, and call 911 as soon as it is safe. The agency also urged people to note the suspect vehicle’s description, license plate, direction of travel, and location. Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP Border Division Major Crimes Unit at 858‑944‑6300.

This incident highlights the ongoing concern about gun violence on California’s freeways. The CHP, the state’s principal highway police agency, has jurisdiction over all state freeways and is responsible for enforcing vehicle laws outside city limits. Its rapid response and arrest of Aldrich demonstrate its role in maintaining safety on major transportation corridors such as I‑15, which connects San Diego to the Inland Empire and beyond.

The woman who was shot was taken to a local hospital and remains hospitalized. No other injuries were reported among the passengers in the Explorer.

The case serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly routine drives can become dangerous when firearms are involved. The CHP’s swift action and the suspect’s arrest aim to restore confidence in the safety of California’s highways.

For now, the investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the shooting and to ensure that the suspect faces the full extent of the law.
