Dirtbags coach signs five-year extension
Long Beach State baseball has locked up head coach Mike Weathers through the 2013 season. Terms of the contract were undisclosed. Since taking over in 2002, Weathers has compiled a 263-153 (.632) record over seven seasons, along with back-to-back trips to the NCAA Super Regionals in 2003 and 2004. He has twice earned Big West Coach of the Year honors.

Long Beach State to finish homestand
The 49ers (3-1-1) conclude their four-match homestand this week with games against Brigham Young University Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and Oregon Sunday, Sept. 14 at noon. LBSU began the season with its best start in school history with a 3-0-1 mark, before losing its first match, 1-0, to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on a penalty kick goal last Sunday. The 49ers defeated Harvard, 3-0, in the first match of the homestand on Sept. 5.

Head coaches to schedule public appearances
Men’s head coach Dan Monson and women’s head coach Mary Hegarty will visit Long Beach-area bars over the next few weeks to help promote the 49er basketball program. The Weekly Wednesday Basketball Coaches Tour’s first stop is Joe Jost’s on 2803 East Anaheim Street from 6-7:30 p.m. on Sept. 10. Other scheduled stops include O’Malley’s on Main, Tantalum and Legend’s Sports Bar and Restaurant on the following Wednesdays.
Men’s water polo
LBSU prepares for weekend doubleheader
The 49ers men’s water polo team will face Golden West Community College Sunday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. The team is also scheduled to play an alumni squad at noon on the same day. Both matches will be played at the 49er Campus Pool.
Women’s golf
49ers produce sixth place finish
Led by freshman standout Lee Lopez, who shot a 4-under 68 in the final round, LBSU placed sixth at the Ptarmigan Country Golf Club. Lopez finished tied for third individually. California took the team title with an 18-under 846 score.
