‘Niners to host Santa Clara for two

No. 22 Long Beach State 49ers (9-1 record)

-The ‘Niners swept the Harvard Invitational, defeating Central Connecticut State, Dartmouth, American and Harvard. American was the only team to win a set, pushing LBSU to five sets.

-All-Tournament selection Nicole Vargas recorded 136 assists, 30 digs, 16 kills and 10 blocks in the four matches. Ashley Lee (51 digs/five aces/.388 hitting) and Caitlin Ledoux (team-high 49 kills) also were selected to the All-Tournament team.

-Ledoux leads the team with 118 kills, which translates to 3.03 kills per set.

-Junior middle blocker Brittney Herzog leads LBSU with a .413 hitting percentage.

-Senior libero Iris Murray anchors the defense with a team-high 143 digs (3.67 per set), followed by Lee’s 123. Ledoux is six digs shy of hitting triple digits, also.

Santa Clara Broncos (7-2 record)

-Members of the West Coast Conference, the Broncos were scheduled to face Sacramento State on Tuesday.

-The team battled through a daunting early-season schedule that includes losses to Utah and No. 6 Stanford.

-Santa Clara defeated fellow Big West Conference member UC Santa Barbara in four sets (25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19) on Sept. 11.

-The Broncos’ attack is headed by senior outside hitter Brittany Lowe, who is averaging 3.71 kills per set through Tuesday.

-Senior outside hitter Taylor O’Brien leads the Broncos with 93 digs on the season. O’Brien is averaging 3.10 digs per set.
