Women’s soccer stays unbeaten in Big West

FULLERTON — The CS Fullerton women’s soccer team held a 6-4 all-time series lead over Long Beach State. Fullerton won three of the last four meetings between the two teams, including last season’s 1-0 win in Long Beach.

The 49ers (10-4-3, 4-0-1 Big West Conference) avenged last season’s loss by virtue of a 1-0 win Sunday night at Titan Stadium in a Big West Conference match.

Sophomore midfielder Lindsay Bullock, who leads the team with seven goals and 15 points, scored the game’s only goal in the 16th minute of the first half. Bullock had a chance two minutes earlier stopped by Titans goalkeeper Shannon Simpson, but she would not be denied again.

Bullock shot the ball from 20 yards out and it initially appeared that Simpson had control of the ball, but then it slipped through her arms and into the back of the net. Both Bullock and senior midfielder Hayley Bolt had two shots on goal.

Although the ‘Niners out-shot the Titans in the first half, 6-2, CS Fullerton (7-9-1, 2-4 Big West) picked up the pace in the second half, out-shooting LBSU, 7-4 — including several point-blank chances.

Casey Schostag was involved in several of the chances, including two late in the game. Schostag and Christina Murillo had a shot on goal each during the Titans’ flurry in the second half.

The 49ers host the CS Northridge Matadors at noon next Sunday at George Allen Field.

LBSU nets four in victory at Riverside

The 49er women’s soccer team cruised past the Highlanders of UC Riverside, 4-1, last Friday night to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Midfielder Kim Silos put LBSU on the board with a goal from 25 yards out in the 37th minute. The 49ers opened up a 2-0 lead after a UCR own-goal.

Silos also had an assist in the 43rd minute on a cross that allowed defender Sarah Strohl to score on a header. Forward Yeraldy Hurtado got into the act during the 81st minute on a goal assisted by midfielder Caroline Shevlin.
