‘Niners complete perfect run through conference

The 49er women’s tennis team capped off an 8-0 season in the Big West with a 5-2 win over UC Davis on Saturday. The Beach took the doubles point before going on to win four of the six singles matches. Senior Hannah Grady defeated UCD’s Randi Schuler, 6-3, 6-1, to finish with a perfect 8-0 mark in Big West singles play. Freshman Anais Dallara soundly defeated Herzyl Legaspie, 6-1, 6-1 while classmate Julie Luzar notched a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jenna Kappel. Sophomore Lisa Sutton defeated Jessica Harris 6-4, 6-4. LBSU defeated Pacific, 6-1, last Friday to clinch its fourth conference title in the last five years.

Women’s Water Polo

LBSU wins first-ever Big West Conference match

Beach women’s water polo defeated Pacific, 10-4, in the program’s Big West Conference debut on Saturday. Sophomore Lauren Sieprath led LBSU with three goals, while Cecilia Canetti, Kelsie Emerick and Branwyn Lee added two apiece. Goaltender Kristen Stragier recorded nine saves for the 49ers. LBSU was scheduled to resume conference action UC Davis at noon on Sunday.

Track and Field

NCAA Regional marks set at UCLA Invitational

Juniors Alex Black and Tayler O’Connor each nabbed qualifying marks in the high jump as LBSU finished action at the UCLA Invitational on Saturday. Black won the men’s high jump with a career-high tying and NCAA Regional mark of 6-10.75. On the women’s side, O’Connor reached the NCAA Regional qualifying mark with a personal-record 5-08.75. Freshman Janelle Coulter finished second, clearing 5-06.50.

Sophomore Rajan Bains set the top shot put (50-06.00) and discus (158-07) marks for LBSU. On the track, freshman Matt Maldonado ran his first 800-meter run of the season placing fourth with a Big West qualifying time of 1:53:52. Senior Jennifer Onyeagbako captured the discus throw with a season-long distance of 162-00. She also took third in the shot put (45-01.00). The Beach will be back in action Friday for the Big West Challenge in Fullerton.

‘Niners capture Anteater Invitational

No. 48 Long Beach State shot a tournament low of 289 in the final round to win the Anteater Invitational at the Dove Canyon Country Club last Wednesday. This marks LBSU’s first tournament win since the 2001-02 season. Senior Kay Hoey and freshman Lee Lopez tied for third overall on the tournament leaderboard with a three-round score of 216. The 49ers compete in the Big West Conference Championship on April 20-21 in San Luis Obispo.
