Sports Picks: Dirtbags to celebrate 20th anniversary

Dirtbags host Matadors at Blair Field

The Dirtbags (15-17, 2-4 Big West Conference) host a three-game series against Cal State Northridge that begins tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. The second game of the series will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. and will have a special ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Dirtbags name change. Former players and coaches are scheduled to be in attendance. The series wraps up on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Softball

‘Niners to play in ESPNU doubleheader

The Beach softball team (24-17, 5-4 BWC) begins a three-game series against UC Santa Barbara with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at the 49er Softball Complex. The series concludes Sunday with a game at 1 p.m. Both Saturday games will be televised on ESPNU.

Women’s Tennis

Long Beach State begins title defense

The 49ers (15-7, 8-0 BWC) will attempt to capture their sixth consecutive conference championship at the Big West Tennis Championships in Indian Wells. LBSU’s first match is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m. against either UC Riverside or Cal State Fullerton.

Track & Field

Beach Invitational scheduled for Saturday

The 49er track and field team hosts its lone “home” meet of the season at Cerritos College’s Falcon Stadium on Saturday. The field events are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., while the track events get underway at 10 a.m.

Women’s Water Polo

Season finishes up at Campus Pool

Long Beach State (8-15, 1-2 BWC) concludes the season with three home matches starting tonight with a Big West Conference showdown against UC Irvine at 7 p.m. The 49ers conclude conference play against UC Santa Barbara at noon on Saturday before wrapping up the season against Southern California at noon on Sunday.
