Griffin, Petty earn major Big West awards

Senior third baseman Jennifer Griffin and freshman pitcher Taylor Petty headlined a list of eight Long Beach State softball players who earned Big West Conference honors Tuesday.

Griffin was named co-Field Player of the Year, while Petty shared co-Freshman Pitcher of the Year honors.

Just the second 49er to receive the accolade, Griffin finished the regular season batting .329 and led the league in doubles (17), walks (48) and on base percentage (.497), while also tying for the lead in RBIs (40) and runs scored (35).

Petty earned LBSU’s third consecutive Freshman Pitcher of the Year award after a 15-4 campaign with a league-best 1.41 ERA. The San Pedro-native also hurled 15 complete games, four shutouts, 129 strikeouts and limited her opponents to a .206 batting average in 144 1/3 innings in the circle.

Both Griffin and Petty were named to the All-Big West first team and were joined by senior Danielle Linke and junior Ashley Weber, marking the second consecutive year the 49ers have placed four players on the first team.

Sophomore pitcher Brooke Turner and senior first baseman Jonae Perez earned second-team honors, while senior Brianna Goad and junior Brandy Reyes were selected as honorable mentions.
