Women’s golf head coach steps down after 13 seasons

Long Beach State athletics director Vic Cegles announced that Sue Ewart has stepped down from the women’s golf head coaching position.

Ewart, who twice earned Big West Coach of the Year recognition (2005 and 2009), will continue to work with the 49er men’s and women’s golf programs as an assistant.

“While it is an unhappy day for our student-athletes and alumnae, we are thrilled she will remain with the program,” Cegles said in a press release.

Ewart stepped down after leading the 49ers to their first-ever Big West Conference Championship, which resulted in a berth in the NCAA Regional Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. Golfers Kay Hoey and Lee Lopez earned first-team All-Big West recognition, while Lopez nabbed the league’s freshman of the year award.

LBSU has made two NCAA Tournament appearances under Ewart’s 13 seasons at the helm. She coached Hoey to two Big West Golfer of the Year awards, along with a pair of All-America honors and a Big West individual crown in 2007.

Ewart has coached 32 players to all-conference honors, with 12 of them tabbing first-team status. In the classroom, 32 players have achieved All-Big West Student-Athlete honors under her watch, with eight attaining Academic All-America status.

The 49er alum was inducted to the Long Beach Golf Hall of Fame in 1997.
