Golf teams to start spring as tournament hosts

Both the Long Beach State men’s and women’s golf teams will open the spring season as hosts of local tournaments next week.

Battle at the Beach

The men will host the second annual Battle at the Beach at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will begin Sunday at 7 a.m. on the par-70, 6,900-yard Ocean North Course.

Monday’s second round will also start at 7 a.m. while the final round will begin Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.

Thirteen schools will compete, with each team carrying six golfers. The lowest score among the six in each round will not count toward the team score. Among the schools competing are No. 2 UCLA, No. 12 Augusta State and No. 15 Arkansas.

“It will be another great field that features teams from across the country,” 49ers head coach Ryan Ressa said in a statement. “There will be three great days of golf at a beautiful course and some highly competitive scores that we’ll be seeing.

“We have the defending national champion Augusta State playing in this year’s tournament and teams from the Pac-10, SEC, Moutain West and West Coast conferences all competing against each other. It’s going to be an exciting tournament.”

The Bruins, with whom Ressa served as an assistant coach last season, won the inaugural Battle at the Beach. LBSU finished in ninth place at 29-over-par.

The 49ers are led by sophomore Raymond Ho, who posted a team-best 74.72 stroke average in the fall.

Gold Rush

The women will host the two-day Gold Rush tournament starting with first- and second-round action on Monday.

The 54-hole event will take place at the Yorba Linda Country Club, which has a par-72, 6,236-yard course. The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday.

Among the 12 teams from five different conferences competing, LBSU will see familiar Big West Conference foes Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside.

“The Gold Rush is finally going to give us the chance to host a tournament for our team,” 49ers head coach Joey Cerulle said in a statement. “Yorba Linda Country Club will be challenging for the players as it has been host to U.S. Women’s Open Qualifying. I’m expecting the course to be in perfect shape, and am hoping that the rains stay away for as much as possible.”

Poor course conditions caused by heavy rain cancelled what was supposed to be last year’s inaugural Gold Rush tournament.

Freshman Rochelle Chan posted impressive results in the fall while competing in all four events for the ‘Niners. Chan notched her first career top-10 finish with a 7-over 153 at the Lamkin Grip Invitational.
