Freshman shoots career-low round

Long Beach State freshman Rochelle Chan fired a 1-under-par 71 in Tuesday’s second round of the Bruin Wave Invitational in Santa Clarita, Calif., to jump from 69th place into tie for 29th on the individual leaderboard.

Chan, whose 71 was a career low, recorded four birdies for the day and one bogey and a double bogey. Chan is 9-over with a 36-hole total of 153.

“I’m so proud of Rochelle,” 49ers head coach Joey Cerulle said. “That was by far the best collegiate round I have seen her play to date.”

LBSU improved by one stroke in Tuesday’s second round, scoring a 308 to finish in ninth place. The 49ers have a three-shot advantage over 47th-ranked Oklahoma State (11th) and 11 shots over 41st-ranked UNLV (13th).

Tournament co-host UCLA continues to lead the field of 15 teams at 1-under. The Bruins holds a nine-stroke lead over fellow co-hosts Pepperdine (+8) and 12 shots over third-place Arizona (+11).

Simone Hoey fell in the standings from eighth to tie for 29th after shooting an 81.

Monica Villarreal improved by three strokes, shooting a second-round 75 to move up from 53rd to tie for 34th. Villarreal is 10-over 154 after 36-holes.

Noelle Zavaleta carded an 82, tying for 55th, while Lindsey McAtee recorded an 81 to finish in 76th.

Stephanie Kono of UCLA and Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Texas share the lead at 3-under, holding a two-stroke lead over three players tied for third place.

“We improved slightly from yesterday and didn’t make as big of a move as we wanted but we are still putting together some solid play,” Cerulle said. “We have a great game plan for tomorrow and look to improve in the standings on our final round.”

The tournament concludes Wednesday with the 49ers teeing off at 9:40 a.m. with BYU and New Mexico. Live action can be followed on golfstat.com.
