Senior highlights final day at Drake Relays

Senior Colin Dunbar closed out the 2011 Drake Relays for the Long Beach State track and field team with a second-place finish in the hammer throw Saturday at Drake Stadium.

Dunbar registered a lifetime-best 219-01 to finish second behind Georgia’s Justin Welch (225-02). Welch ranks fourth among all NCAA Division I throwers, while Dunbar moved up to eighth.

Dunbar capped off a strong showing for the LBSU throwers as senior Randi Hicks won the women’s javelin on Friday.

Christopher Lawson was slated to run the 400-meter hurdles, but pulled out due to an injury.

LBSU also kicked off the 17th annual Asics Steve Scott Invitational today.

Ben Woodruff won the men’s javelin with a lifetime-best 221-01, which ranks him third in school history.

Heath Reedy also claimed the men’s 5000-meter title. Complete results were not available at time of release.

The 49ers close out the Steve Scott Invite on Sunday at Anteater Stadium in Irvine. Both the field and track events begin at noon.
