Gimmillaro earns contract extension

Long Beach State women’s volleyball coach Brian Gimmillaro has agreed to a contract extension through 2018, athletic director Vic Cegles announced today.

Gimmillaro, who has coached the 49ers since 1985, will also become the Director of Women’s Volleyball, according to a press release by the LBSU athletics department.

“I want to thank Vic [Cegles] for giving me this opportunity to continue my career here at our University,” Gimmillaro said. “I feel fortunate to have an opportunity to bring additional championships to our community.”

Gimmillaro has already won three national championships, the last of which came in 1998. He is also one of eight active Division I coaches to reach 700 career wins.

“Brian is one of the nation’s outstanding volleyball coaches, and we are fortunate to extend him through 2018,” Cegles said. “[Gimmillaro] has had a major impact on student-athletes, the University and the Long Beach community and we look forward to his continued leadership.”

In Gimmillaro’s immediate future is a trip to Gulf Shores, Ala., where he will lead the LBSU women’s sand volleyball team in the NCAA tournament. The 49ers finished second to Pepperdine in last year’s tournament.
