Fee increase

The Beach Legacy Fund will have students paying fees of $95 for the semester and $70 for the summer term to replace the current $43 the athletic department receives from each student annually. The money will go to the construction of athletic facilities and scholarships and in increase in the department’s operating budget.

The proposal was approved by the Student Fee Advisory Committee and will go before students as a referendum March 11-12.

Why increase fees in today’s economic climate?

Wayne Stickney, CSULB athletic department, says it’s never a good time to raise fees.

Does the athletic department have a plan as to how to spend the money?

Wayne Stickney says the athletic department has received “estimates” and “guestimates” from construction companies and donors as to how much the buildings they want to construct will cost. He said they can make those numbers available from some of the companies they reached out to.

Will championship CSULB teams increase the likelihood of graduates getting a job?

A CSULB alumni who supports the proposed fee increase and Stickney say that having championship teams may help CSULB graduates find jobs.

Why will CSULB be having the referendum in the spring semester rather than the fall semester?

Daily 49er staff question if it would be better to have the referendum during the fall semester when more freshman who’ll have to pay the fee will be able to vote on whether to accept it.

What will the fee’s affect be on attendance?

How important are new facilities to recruiting athletes?

A former CSULB athlete says good facilities are crucial in recruiting athletes. With the current state of facilities CSULB recruiters have to rely more on good coaching and team atmosphere as pitches to recruits.
