‘The Beach’ relocates poolside

More than 100 students met by the pool at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center for “Beach Pride by the Poolside” on Tuesday, when students had a chance to show off their curves along with their limbo skills at the bi-annual event hosted by Associated Students Inc.

“It’s designed to give students a chance to socialize and meet people from their own departments and others as well,” said Katrina Newman, assistant recruitment officer for ASI. “It brings people to the new rec center.”

Free tacos and quesadillas were cooked and handed out of a food truck provided by Super Mex to everybody who waited in line. Cha For Tea provided samples of their best selling appetizers and teas.

The mostly sunny skies brought 73-degree weather that felt more like 80-degree weather.

A DJ played the Top 100 music hits as students chatted among each other and watched the Cal State Long Beach Breakers spin and flip with ease while the sun bronzed their skin.

Activities included raffles, piñata, limbo, a pie eating contest and a traditional “Beach Pride by the Poolside” game called “Fishing for Gold,” where students searched the bottom of the pool for the matching key to a locked box. The winner kept the gift card inside the box.

“It is the biggest I think it has ever gotten,” ASI special events commissioner RoseAnn Knight said in regards to the size of the event.

She said it was the first time it was held at the recreation center. Prior to this semester, it has been held at the much smaller University Student Union pool.

Some recreation center locals had not heard of the event, but were happy to see it taking place.

“No one is ever out here,” film major Carly Gilleland said about crowd. “It’s nice to see some activity and people. I hope it stimulates activity and more people to take advantage of what it has to offer.”

The warm sun provided a taste of spring break, which is soon approaching giving more of a reason for students to join in on the event.

“I wish I didn’t have any more classes today so I could hang out by the pool,” CSULB student Jose Torres said. After hitting the gym, Torres said he was, “sucked in by the music.”

The festivities began at 11:30 a.m. and ended at 1:30 p.m.

Students who are interested in attending the event next semester should look on Facebook under CSULB ASI.
