Long Beach Bag Ban Goes Forward as Planned

The Long Beach plastic bag ban, which was voted in on May 24, will prohibit the distribution of all plastic carry out bags in Long Beach and will begin on Aug. 1.

According to the Long Beach Press Telegram, city officials proposed to delay the plastic bag ban for large retailers but the proposal did not go through.

The Press Telegram also reported that while supermarkets, drugstore chains and retailers will begin the bag ban on Aug. 1, smaller stores and famers markets will be banned from distributing plastic bags beginning on Jan.1.

According to the Long Beach Post, the ban initially did not apply to the bags distributed by large retailers like Target or Walmart. This has changed and those stores are now included in the ban as well.

According to longbeach.gov, San Francisco, Malibu, Marin County and the unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County have also enacted bans on plastic bags.
