Green Books push eco-friendly campus

The examination Green Book, made of 100 percent recycled paper and 30 percent post-consumer paper, is taking the place of the Blue Book.

In efforts to make the campus more eco-friendly, 49er Shops made the decision to switch to the Green Books.

Blue Books can still be found in some Cal State Long Beach sales locations, such as the Beach Cart by the College of Business Administration building, until the final supply runs out.

Some students, like freshman electrical engineering major Jordan Le, said it is a good idea to use recycled paper.

Other students look forward to what changes this could lead to in the future for recycled school supplies. Senior psychology major Yvette Melgoza was happy to learn about the Green Books and agrees with the changes.

“Maybe, in the future, we’ll have recyclable Scantrons,” Melgoza said. “Now that would be a good idea.”

Due to a price increase made over the summer for Scantrons and Blue Books, the Green Books are also being sold for 40 cents plus tax. The books are still manufactured by Comet School Supplies, but they are part of the eco-friendly Releaf Series.

Fred Neely, director of Bookstore Services, said the Green Books still have the same amount of paper as the Blue Books. The only differences are that they now have a green cover and are made from recyclable content.

“Due to the popularity of the large Blue Books and minimal usage of small Blue Books, the small books will no longer be available once current stock is sold out,” Neely said.

Junior biology major Kevin Lopez said the Green Books are a great idea and that recycled exam books should have been adapted by our campus long ago.

“They should have caught on sooner,” Lopez said.
