ASI Judiciary to kick off informational campaign

The Associated Students Inc. Judiciary is launching Know Your Rights, a campaign that will offer students a series of workshops ranging from student services on campus to legal advice.

The event will kick off next Monday, ending with a panel in the Beach Auditorium on Thursday.

Dina Al-Hayek, chief justice for the ASI Judiciary, came up with the idea for the campaign because she kept getting questions from students about what kinds of rights they have.

“This campaign is designed to encompass a variety of students’ needs and answer their questions in a more thorough manner,” Al-Hayek said in a press release. “Instead of having students search for answers and information, we are bringing the resources to them.”

Monday’s topic will be academic services. Representatives from Enrollment Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Academic Advising will go over issues like grade appeals, withdrawals and repeat/delete procedures in Room 205 at the University Student Union

On Tuesday, three experts will talk about housing and tuition in the USU ballroom. The experts will talk about how to avoid incarceration and legal problems related to on and off campus housing. A question-and-answer session will follow the discussion.

On Wednesday, there will be a pro bono legal services workshop for students sponsored by Southwestern University of Law, in Room 205 of the USU.

On Thursday, in the beach auditorium, a panel consisting of a lawyer, Cal State Long Beach Vice President Douglas Robinson, CSULB professors, and Al-Hayek will answer specific questions asked by two moderators.

All workshops will be held from 5-7 p.m.

Christina Esparza, ASI communications coordinator, said all this information will benefit students.

“I think anytime students can be empowered with information is good, and unfortunately students don’t always know what rights they have,” Esparza said. The Associated Students Inc.
