Beach tennis makes it 3 in a row

The 49ers clinched their third consecutive Big West Conference regular season championship with a 5-2 win at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, giving Long Beach State the No. 1-overall seed for the Big West Championships in Indian Wells later this month.

The victory over the Gauchos gave head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello’s team its seventh Big West title overall and extends its winning streak against conference foes to 35, dating back to the 2007 season.

The Beach (15-3, 7-0 Big West) got its day started by sweeping the doubles point after pulling off tiebreaker wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles, along with a 9-7 squeaker at No. 2.

Beach freshman Jaklin Alawi defeated Sofia Novak 6-4, 7-6 (5) at No. 1 singles, as Anais Dallara thwarted Natalia Lozano 6-3, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 singles. Deborah Armstrong kept it rolling for the 49ers at the top of the singles draw with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Jill Damion at No. 3.

At No. 4 singles, LBSU sophomore Rachel Manasse fell 6-3, 6-3 to Tova Hausman, while classmate Julie Luzar dropped a 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 decision to Annabel Gledden at No. 5 singles. LBSU freshman Sarah Cantlay picked up a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Jordan Dockendorf at No. 6 singles.

The 49ers wrap up the Big West portion of their schedule at Cal State Northridge next Saturday, April 10 at 2 p.m. before hosting St. Mary’s (Calif.) in a nonconference match on April 11 at 11 a.m.
