Women’s Tennis: Alawi picks up conference nod

Freshman Jaklin Alawi was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week on Wednesday after picking up singles victories at Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara over the weekend.

She defeated No. 85 Susie Matzenauer in the 49ers’ 5-2 win over Cal Poly before toppling UCSB’s Sofia Novak the next day in a 5-2 triumph over the Gauchos.

The honor marked Alawi’s second of the season and third by a Long Beach State player this year.

Men’s Volleyball: 49ers lose fourth straight

No. 8 Long Beach State dropped its fourth consecutive match Wednesday night, falling in four sets to UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center.

The Anteaters won by a score of 30-21, 31-29, 28-30, 30-28 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation showdown.

LBSU (12-14, 8-11 MPSF) received 22 kills from senior Dean Bittner, along with 14 from Jim Baughman and 13 from Dan Alexander. The Beach hit .245 for the match, while UCI registered .312 as a team.

Carson Clark paced the Anteaters (13-13, 8-11 MPSF) with 23 kills on 52 swings, followed by Jordan DuFault, who had 15 kills on 31 swings.

Beach setter Conor Eaton matched his UCI counterpart Jeff Schmitz with 57 assists.

The 49ers’ three remaining matches will be played at the Walter Pyramid, with the next tilt coming Friday night against No. 7 UCLA at 7 p.m.
