49ers breeze through Day 1 at Fullerton Invitational

After a solid showing at the Cal NIKE Invitational in late Sepetember, the Long Beach State women’s tennis team kept the ball rolling in its first day of competition at the Fullerton Invitational on Friday.

All seven 49ers taking part in the three-day tournament easily took care of their opponents to advance to the round of 16 on Saturday. In all, the ‘Niners won all 10 of their matches — nine on the individual side and one doubles match.

The Beach earned five opening-round byes on the individual side, but Sarah Cantlay and Julie Luzar both picked up two wins to move into the round of 16 with the rest of their teammates.

The remaining 49ers made easy work of their respective opponents in the round of 32. Top-seed Klaudia Malenovska beat Loyola Marymount’s Melissa Valenzuela 6-2, 6-1 to advance. Meanwhile, junior Anais Dallara had the 49ers’ most impressive effort on Day 1 after posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Portland State’s Nayantara Vadali.

Jaklin Alwai and Deborah Armstrong each surrendered just one game in wins over Julie Hutton (Cal State Bakersfield) and Leslie Bullock (Cal State Fullerton), respectively.

Three of the four LBSU doubles teams received byes on Day 1, but the tandem of Cantlay and Luzar will join the rest on Saturday after earning an 8-0 victory over the Portland State duo of Emily McClaren and Vadali.

Junior Rachel Manasse — who missed the Cal NIKE Invitational — didn’t participate on the individual side, but she is scheduled to team up with Malenovska for doubles action on Saturday.

Day 2 will begin with doubles at 8 a.m., before the individuals’ round of 16 that is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m.
