Wu Tang Clan ‘Bring the Rukus’ to Club Nokia

The crowd erupted in frenzy with the two-handed W symbol waved in the air as the Wu Tang Clan took the stage Sunday night at Club Nokia in Los Angeles during the groups Rebirth Tour. It was no surprise that the group would give a performance to remind their fans why they’re amongst the best in the hip-hop world.

With no hesitation, the members of the Wu Tang Clan came with their notorious all-out attack style to give the crowd an unforgettable performance. With the exception of RZA who is currently in China filming his first movie and deceased Ol’ Dirty Bastard — Ghostface Killa, Method Man, GZA, U-God, Raekwon, Masta Killa and Inspectah Deck, including the newest member Cappadonna and other guests, the clan was in full attendance and attacking with full force.

Opening with the hit track “Bring the Rukus” from their debut album Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers), the set list only progressed by popularity. Self-proclaimed success act, Method Man, stepped onto the stage during the second song and joining the clan. Later, he jumped out to crowd surf where the fans held him high as if praising a master at his craft.

Within the clan, each individual rapper of the nine-member group has his own distinct sound and personalized trait that gives the group its overall chaotic yet deepening and meaningful theme about drug dealing, harsh living conditions and the craze for partying. The clan has produced five major albums along with numerous solo albums from each member.

The show opened with smaller acts that gave the crowd a good vibe, but none compared to that of the Wu Tang Clan. Members of the clan would ask to dim the lights and raise the microphones’ volume, which then became overwhelmingly loud, while pleading to the crowd to raise their hands and look more lively.

Although the act on stage was in full effect with petrifying lyricism and dancing from Cappadonna and Method Man that seemed a little farfetched for even the rest of the clan, the crowd was just not giving back the same energy. Understandably, the crowd’s energy seemed to have been drained by the five-hour wait before the clan finally took the stage. The crowd showed, or rather a lack of, even the slightest act of enthusiasm for the performance.

But the clan carried on, playing infamous tracks from the groups’ five albums such as “16th Chamber,” “Shame on a Nigga,” “C.R.E.A.M.,” including the solo track “Method Man,” bringing the crowd back to life.

Method Man paused from the attack to dedicate the life and success of longtime friend and member of the clan, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, who died of a drug overdose in November of 2004. He said, “Not only did ODB love his life, his music, and pussy, [he] loved where he came from.”

Soon after, the clan welcomed special guest, Young ODB, Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s son onto the stage. Young ODB, a mere replica of his father, performed acts that brought his father to level of fame that he respectfully deserved. Songs such as “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” and “Got Your Money” weren’t exactly as eccentric as the original, but the aggression and the stage presence was definitely in Young ODB’s favor.

In the end, the Wu Tang Clan regained the undivided attention of its crowd to give them an all around feeling of satisfactory. The clan continues its Rebirth Tour with its legacy and the potency of a memorable group in hip-hop.
