Photoblog: L.A. Affordable Art Fair

Los Angeles’ inaugural Affordable Art Fair set up a tent at L.A. Live’s Event Deck from Jan. 17-22 to showcase contemporary pieces ranging from $100-$10,000 from more than 40 galleries.

Some local gallery participants, included Culver City’s Thinkspace Gallery and Laguna Beach’s JoAnne Artman Gallery.

The week-long celebration did not only benefit the artists’ reputations and pockets, but it also gave a portion of its admission fee proceeds to nonprofit organization Free Arts for Abused Children.

Some standouts of the event were the glossy woodsy paintings from Canada’s Feral Fine Gallery, the series from New York’s BadJupiter Project’s and the limited sculptures from L.A.’s very own Toy Art Gallery.

MakerBot Industry’s open source 3D printer The Replicator also stunned many with its ability to help make ideas come to tangible form.

Even though the event had tasteful artwork, there was a missing element that even the complimentary drinks could not fill. Artists need to make a living, but the prices of the pieces were not at all affordable for the typical starving student. Perhaps the AAF should be renamed to the Unaffordable Arts Unfair.
