Sound waves hit University by the Sea

Music, art and culture came together to celebrate the second annual University by the Sea in downtown Long Beach.

Local bands performed live concerts on a carbon-dioxide free main stage and used solar power to generate the lighting and sound in order to maintain an eco-friendly environment. The concerts were part of a benefit for music education in Long Beach schools.

One of the first bands that performed on the stage sponsored by local radio station Indie 103.1 was comprised of young kids who covered songs from popular bands like The Doors and Red Hot Chili Peppers. One of the songs the band performed was “Snow (Hey Oh)” by RHCP.

The Angel City Derby Girls roller skated to music played by DJ Abel in front of the same stage.

Following the Derby Girls was a local indie punk band, fronted by lead singer Marilese.

“I want people to be themselves when they listen [to my music].” Marilese said. “I want them to break out of their bubble.”

Other performances at the event included cultural groups, such as the Demo Zone, that offered dance lessons on a small ground level stage to the beat of conga drums.
