Daily Forty-Niner advertisement causes confusion

A full-color insert found in Monday’s issue of the Daily Forty-Niner raised concerns on campus.

The insert was a graphic depiction of abortion procedures. It was unclear to many readers that the insert was a paid advertisement, and the Daily Forty-Niner and several campus administrators received phone calls from members of the campus and local community concerned with the insert.

Each insert advertisement is prepared and submitted ready to go into the newspaper. 49er Publications General Manager Beverly Munson said that when she received the insert it should have said it was an advertisement.

“At that point I should have said it needs to say ‘paid advertisement’ and the organization it’s sponsored by, and I did not do that,” Munson said.

An individual responsible for the creation of the advertisement refused to comment on the insert.

“She’s concerned for herself and what it could do to her job,” Munson said. Munson decided not to reveal the name and contact information of the individual to the editorial staff.

The insert was scheduled to run a second time in Thursday’s issue of the Daily Forty-Niner, but the advertisement was pulled.

The Daily Forty-Niner and Daily49er.com will run disclaimers throughout the week to clear up any confusion on the insert.
