Greeks game it up for charity

The Greek Community breaks out their team colors as Greek Week begins at Cal State Long Beach.

The sororities and fraternities on campus have already raised over $10,000 for Camp Heartland, a foundation for children who have HIV/AIDS, and plan to raise more during this week’s festivities.

“All the sororities and fraternities are spilt up into seven different colored teams and participate in different events that benefit the community and help raise money for Camp Heartland,” said Melissa Carson, a junior and member of the Alpha Phi sorority.

The events consist of beach clean-ups, restaurant fundraisers, a blood drive and a soda-can castle competition that will take place at Beach Circle, which is located between the College of Business and Administration building and the track, today at 12:30 p.m. All teams will be judged on their originality and overall building of a castle made completely out of cans. At the end of the competition, all cans will be recycled at a local recycling center.

Another Greek Week event, Penny Wars, has already started and will be going on all week. Bring your pennies and place them into your favorite sorority or fraternity’s container, which will be located at the tables outside of the Nugget.

On Thursday, Legends Restaurant on Second Street will be holding a fundraiser all day and night. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Camp Heartland.

“Getting all the Greeks together in one area to help out an awesome foundation is something that I look forward to all year,” said Elise Severson, president of Alpha Phi.

Greek Week will conclude with the Greek Games, which will take place on Rugby Fields Friday at 2 p.m. The games will include tug-o-war, a dizzy bat competition, a water pass game and brainteasers.

Sororities and fraternities will also participate in Kaleidoscope on Saturday, where they will each have their own booth.
