Students sue CSU for new fees, case review scheduled

A court case involving California State University students suing the CSU board of trustees will still be reviewed after a San Francisco judge refused on Monday a preliminary injunction to stop nine campuses — including Cal State Long Beach — from raising student fees by 20 percent.

The students, who attend San Francisco State University, sued the CSU board of trustees July 31 after claiming the university illegally billed them twice for tuition after it charged the students one payment in June for the fall semester and demanded more money for the same semester in August.

The preliminary injunction would have blocked the fee increase at the nine universities that have not collected it already. The nine universities include San Jose and Sonoma State and the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, as well as campuses in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Sacramento, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

A request for the court’s determination on the case is scheduled for Sept. 9 at 9:30 a.m.
