Alleged murderer’s hearing rescheduled for 2nd time

The preliminary hearing for the suspect in the murder of a Cal State Long Beach nursing student has been moved to Oct. 19. This is the second time the hearing has been rescheduled.

Jonathan Huynh, handcuffed and led in by a deputy officer, scanned the crowd during his brief appearance in court this morning. While waiting for his case to be heard, the former Trabuco Hills High student silently mouthed words toward the floor. He was 20 when he pleaded not guilty to the murder of his girlfriend, Kate Yi, in late April.

Yi’s body was discovered in her apartment by her roommate on April 2, shortly after 7 p.m. Paramedics pronounced Yi, 20, dead at the scene. The official cause of death from the coroner is asphyxiation through strangulation.

Police led an investigation after learning about an altercation that occurred between the couple the evening of Yi’s death. Friends say Yi met with Huynh to break up with him, according to a Press-Telegram article published April 20.

Huynh has been in custody since April 4 and his bail stands at $1 million. The hearing was originally set for June 24.
