Local concert Friday to prevent domestic violence

The Long Beach Interval House will host its third annual concert fundraiser for the prevention of domestic violence this Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight at Don The Beachcomber restaurant in Huntington Beach.

According to a flyer, musical artists Tiana Star, Bootleg Honey, Monkeys with Fire, Darren Ortiz and Dennis Kaiser will be performing throughout the evening. Event Coordinator Matt Murphree said in an e-mail that individuals will also be on hand to share their experiences and educate the public on the lasting effects of domestic violence.

The Interval House will also show a film during the event.

“This is the first and very special year of us putting together the education aspect of the event that is directed at Long Beach State students,” Murphree said via e-mail. “This year is an awareness aspect directed at those who either have never been exposed to the issue or are unaware of its consequences.”

According to Murphree, the Interval House holds multiple fundraisers annually with two previous concert fundraisers drawing more than 300 individuals.

The Interval House first began in 1979 in a three-bedroom house that held 8-10 people, Janine Limas of Interval House said via e-mail. It has gained nationwide recognition since then.

“Interval House has evolved from its humble beginnings into a nationally recognized comprehensive domestic violence program,” Limas said via e-mail. “The extraordinary program is unique in the nation for providing all programs and services in 67 different languages 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

According to Limas, the expanded program now includes two emergency shelters, four transitional housing sites, two comprehensive community service centers and 10 satellite offices in greater Long Beach and Orange County. Some of the services the Interval House program provides are 24-hour crisis and teen hotlines, legal services, substance abuse recovery and transitional and permanent housing.

Proceeds from the concert fundraiser event will go toward funding these services.

Tickets for the event are $20. A dinner may also be purchased with event tickets for $30. Murphree said Cal State Long Beach students can attend the event at a discount rate of $5 with a valid ID.

Tickets are available at the Seal Beach Sun Newspaper and at brownpapertickets.com. The event is sponsored by the Seal Beach Sun Newspaper, workinjoe music, Don the Beachcomber, Color broadband and Matt Murphree of Emac Home Loans.
