New ASI committee in place

The Associated Students Inc. confirmed new committee members at the ASI Senate meeting Wednesday.

Each of the 11 members confirmed, as well as two representatives for the University Student Union board of trustees, spoke for a short time about their goals for their positions in the upcoming year.

Some of the more notable goals came from the secretary for system wide affairs, student orientation commissioner and conservation Commissioner.

Loreal Harper, student orientation commissioner, spoke about her goals to help make students feel more comfortable on campus. She also said she plans to incorporate a table to share the history of Cal State Long Beach at the Week of Welcome in lieu of University 100, which was canceled last year.

Conservation Commissioner Jessica Young said she plans to incorporate dorms into the conservation movement.

A voter registration and mobilization effort spearheaded by Secretary for System Wide Affairs Llaura Garcia is planned to take effect in the fall. The goal is to register approximately 3,500 eligible voters on campus, according to ASI President James Ahumada.

Local specific advertisements and strategic placement of tables will be used to catch the attention of as many students as possible. The advertisements will apply to the demographic of different colleges. For example, Proposition 23, which suspends air pollution control laws, will be advertised in the Engineering Building.

Chief Programming Officer Kimberly Helm discussed her plans for Week of Welcome, which involve expanding the event to the Commencement Lawn. This plan may be difficult to achieve because the Commencement Lawn is too close to classrooms, and the noise levels associated with Week of Welcome may disrupt classes. Helm said the Commencement Lawn may only be used as an overflow space for additional student organizations that wish to participate in the event, while the noisier participants or segments of Week of Welcome will remain in the Speakers Platform.

There are five vacancies in the ASI Senate: two in the arts, one in education, one in liberal arts and 1 senator-at-large.
