CSULB students join LA-area protest

A group of Cal State Long Beach students, part of Students Fight Back, joined in a march in Los Angeles on Saturday that demanded justice for the killing of Manuel Jamines by a Los Angeles police officer on Sept. 5.

“Our goal is to have an organized march to target the culprits of this murder,” said Doug Kauffman, an organizer for Students Fight Back. “We want to organize the community so they are able to fight back when these incidents happen.”

Protesters gathered at 6th Street and Union Avenue — the site of the killing — after the outrage among the Guatemalan immigrant community. They then marched to City Hall in an effort to hold the LAPD and city officials accountable for the killing of the Guatemalan immigrant.

Five CSULB students showed up at the event, carrying signs and in solidarity with other organizations also protesting the killing.

“This isn’t the only time the police have killed someone,” Kauffman said.

“This is a serious epidemic that is a part of a system that no longer serves the interest of the people,” Kauffman added.

Students Fight Back has been at the site of the killing every night since the incident occurred, protesting the killing and organizing the community for the Sept. 18 march.

The organization demands the arrest of the officer involved in the incident, 13-year veteran Frank Hernandez, who has been put on forced leave twice in the past for shooting people.
