CSULB losing the November registration race

Associated Students, Inc. is struggling in the competition to register new voters for the upcoming November elections.

Cal State Long Beach has pledged, along with the 22 other California State University campuses, to register at least 10 percent of the campus population.

About 300 students have been registered through ASI. However, in comparison with other universities that are CSULB’s size, the amount is negligible. San Diego State has registered more than 650 students and Cal State Fullerton has registered more than 700 students. ASI hopes to add 3,500 more students before Oct. 18 — the last day to register to vote.

“If students vote, their representative will be much more entitled to listen to their needs. If we build a coalition of young voters, we could increase our fight against budget cuts,” vice president of ASI Lucy Nguyen said.

In addition to the heated competition between CSU Fullerton, senators have also requested to add competition among one another.

Students who wish to register for the November elections have opportunities to do so at the women’s volleyball game against Fullerton on Saturday and the voter registration fair on Oct. 12 at the Southwest Terrace.
