VIDEO: Arianna Huffington visits CSULB

Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor in chief of The Huffington Post, spoke at Cal State Long Beach on Thursday.

The event was held in the Carpenter Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. It was the fourth installment of CSULB’s annual Distinguished Speaker Series.

Huffington, a nationally-syndicated columnist and writer of 13 books, spoke on the role of new media, as she pointed out the failure of mainstream media to pick up major stories, saying they suffer from “attention deficit disorder.”

Huffington acknowledged the success that The Huffington Post derives from its many contributing writers.

“It’s not just about consuming news, but sharing news and developing news. We would definitely like to work with you on The Huffington Post and learn what is happening here and what is happening in your lives,” Huffington told the Daily 49er.

Huffington’s speech was followed with a question-and-answer session with three panelists. Later, audience members submitted hand-written questions for Huffington to answer.

Students were impressed with not only Huffington’s knowledge, but also her own stories regarding sleep deprivation and time management.

“I thought that was enlightening and how she used her personal life to try and help others,” said ASI Vice President Lucy Nguyen, one of the panelists.

Huffington later greeted audience members at a book signing in the lobby area for her newest book, “Third World America.”
