Student candidate vows to continue to raise awareness

“We will continue regardless of the polls,” said Marylou Cabral, Cal State Long Beach student and secretary of state candidate in yesterday’s midterm election.

Cabral received roughly 50,000 votes or one percent, finishing last in a six-candidate race.

Cabral said she ran the campaign not to win but to “raise awareness.”

“The election campaign was a platform … to reach out to the community, people of color and students who are struggling for rights,” Cabral said.

As the Daily 49er went to print, incumbent Democrat Debra Bowen was leading Republican candidate Damon Dunn 50 percent to 45 percent.

Cabral, a Peace and Freedom candidate for secretary of state, is a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL).

A socialist party, PSL calls for a “socialist transformation of society.”

The Freedom party maintains feminist and socialist platforms. In 2008, the party nominated Ralph Nader for United States President.
