Students rally for Boxer near CSULB polling place

Chants of “Fuck Fiorina,” “We want votes and hoes” and “Vote Barbara Boxer” sounded outside the Cal State Long Beach Soroptimist House Tuesday night.

“[Boxer] does not support offshore drilling, she cosigned the DREAM Act and the Clean Air Act and she’s pro-choice,” said Monica Viera, a freshman social work major. “We get a lot of people saying we are baby killers.”

Viera was part of a group of about 10 Boxer supporters lining Beach Drive. “[Fiorina] is going to try to overturn Roe v. Wade,” she continued.

Hundreds of CSULB students and Long Beach community members lined up to cast their votes at the house-turned-polling station.

“I’m voting because it’s voting day,” said Phillip Nauman, a sophomore business finance major. Nuaman, who wasn’t happy with either California senatorial candidate, was quick to say that the Boxer supporters would not affect his vote.

The line leading into a packed Soroptimist House flooded outside the door and onto the sidewalk.

“It’s been like this since the morning,” said Logan Hayes, a poll worker who was surrounded by student voters.

Students came to vote for various reasons.

People in line discussed issues ranging from Proposition 19, a measure to legalize and tax marijuana, to Proposition 20, a measure that would vest redistricting power in the California Citizens Redistricting Commission.

Senior interdisciplinary studies major Mike Anderson, who had voted earlier, was adamant in his defense of Proposition 20. His friend, however, was more interested in the passage of Proposition 19.

Hosted by Associated Students Inc., the voting station opened at 7 a.m. and closed at 8 p.m. While voters registered in other counties were allowed to drop off absentee ballots, only Los Angeles County registered voters were allowed to vote.

ASI Assistant Director Kim Pabari told the Daily 49er Monday that 300 absentee votes were cast on-campus last year from voters who live outside Los Angeles County.

There was no counter-rally held for Republican senatorial candidate Carly Fiorina.
