CSULB hosts pep rally Wednesday

Associated Students Inc. is hosting its annual pep rally event Wednesday to spread school spirit in preparation for the Homecoming game Saturday against San Diego State.

“It’s all about school spirit,” Entertainment Commissioner Becca Bowdey said. “This year will be better than last because of the jam-packed events and activities planned, and overall amount of school spirit.”

The event will be held at the Walter Pyramid. Doors open at 7 p.m. and a disc jockey will play music until 7:30 p.m. Raffle tickets will be given out upon arrival for attendees to vote during the Battle of the Bands contest. They will also receive a chance to win an iPad.

The event will begin with the Battle of the Bands on the concession level floor at 7:30 p.m. Out of 25 applicants, bands Hey You! and Fall of November were the two finalists that ASI chose to compete. The vote for the winning band will be split between attendees and a panel of judges.

Attendees will then move to the bleachers of the basketball court, where ASI will welcome everyone with an introduction.

The PAC Modern dance group will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. with its hip-hop routine, followed by the Long Beach State co-ed cheer team and pep band. The cheer team placed second in the 2010 NCA Nationals, and appeared in “Bring It On 5,” “Alvin and the Chipmunks 2” and “Glee.”

ASI will then welcome the women’s basketball team in support of this weekend’s game, in addition to the dance team accompanied by the pep band.

After the performances, the LBSU men’s basketball team will take center court, and the Battle of the Bands winner will be announced.

Five student females and five student males will then be introduced as the Homecoming court. Based on their Beach pride and involvement within the CSULB community, two of the 10 finalists will ultimately be crowned Homecoming king and queen during halftime of Saturday’s game.

The Salsa team will also perform before the final event, a raffle drawing to determine the winner of an iPad.

The Homecoming game will peg CSULB against San Diego State Nov. 13.

The tailgate will be held at the Pyramid parking lot between 12-4 p.m., giving students a chance to become more familiar with student organizations, cast a vote for Homecoming king and queen, and enjoy games, activities and food.

The Homecoming game will start at 4:05 p.m.
