Balloon causes CSULB campuswide power outage

A mylar balloon gone rogue drifted into a transformer on east campus Saturday morning, leaving the school without power and perhaps a poor child in tears.

According to Rick Gloady, director of media relations, the metallic balloon sparked the power outage around 10 a.m., affecting various buildings on campus before Southern California Edison was able to switch the power back on at 1 p.m. Buildings around campus started to receive power shortly thereafter.

In addition, Gloady said the back-up generators that service select buildings turned on when the power was lost.
