CSULB loses power during weekend

Cal State Long Beach suffered a power outage last Saturday that lasted from approximately 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Emergency crews from campus and Southern California Edison were called to the scene to restore power. The on-campus Internet was also out of service, although campus telephones were still working.

Residents of Parkside Commons, Los Alamitos and Los Cerritos dorms were directly affected.

“We couldn’t even turn on the lights to shower,” freshman Melissa Henriques said.

Los Alamitos resident advisor Laura Jenkins said, some student felt deprived of the luxuries they paid to have guaranteed.

Alamitos resident Abby Bowe described her experience as “daunting.”

“Because my phone was dead and I couldn’t charge it, I felt detached from the rest of campus,” she said.

Students turned to other non-electronic distractions such as books and playing cards, while waiting for the emergency crews to return power to CSULB.

“I played ‘slide’ for the first time in years,” freshman Alli Haase joked.

Girls living on the third floor of Los Alamitos battled the dark corridors and bathrooms by traveling in groups and occupying all five of the shower stalls at once to distract from the gloomy atmosphere.

At around 4 p.m. the power resumed on campus and the residents sighed with relief.

“It made me think about how reliant we are on technology,” freshman Jillian Urhausen said.

The cause of the power outage remains unknown.
