Fresh Foods to be Temporarily Replaced by Grab-and-Go Convenience Store

The Fresh Foods Café Express in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center will be replaced by a temporary convenience store by finals week or winter break at the latest. The Fresh Foods Café Express unexpectedly closed shop Nov. 13.

“Our goal is to provide minimal food and beverage products for the time being,” said Dave Edwards, Associate Student Inc. associate executive director and director of the University Student Union.

The temporary food and beverage shop will provide food and beverages that are already provided by vendors on campus such as Coca-Cola products, juices and energy bars. The rec center is currently waiting for approval from the city health inspector.

According to Edwards, the store will probably be in operation for a few months until the USU Board of Trustees has reviewed proposals for a permanent vendor that will meet needs of students.

Although some students prefer to keep a food place at the rec center, others have different opinions about what vendor they want to take the permanent place of the convenience store.

“It would be cool if they sold supplements, proteins, or sportswear and gave a student discount,” said senior civil engineering major Christian Castro.

Some students want to see the space turned into a mixture of a café and a convenience store, with health remaining a top priority.

“I would like to see a smoothie shop because after working out I don’t want a meal, but something fruity and refreshing,” said junior public relations major Brittany Mehciz.
