Spring Closures Caused Inflation of Fall Applications

Yesterday, the Daily 49er reported on the number of transfer student applications that had been received for fall 2011. This number, along with fall 2010 applications, were inordinately greater than any years prior by 40 percent.

The reason for this large increase is due to the closures of spring 2009 and spring 2010 transfers, where many students who were prepared to transfer during the spring semesters were forced to apply for the following fall.

The Institutional Research and Assessment report neglected to take this information into account and focused solely on the fall semester. The number of transfer applications received on or before 2008 was less because there was two application filing semesters, fall and spring.

The California budget crisis also affected other CSU schools, causing other universities to increase their requirements for transfer admissions. This could have led Cal State Long Beach to receive more wayward students than normal, according to Marie Alford, director of admissions.

The closure of spring transfers also caused the inflation of the total number of applications received for fall 2010. The 10,000 increase in total number of applications received reflects the added increase of transfer student applications, and the average expected growth in general.

Questions remain whether the number of applicants will begin to decrease because spring transfers are open again.

“We have to be prepared for things to go in a couple of different directions. There are too many unknowns to predict,” Alford said. “We do know there are still a lot of transfers out there that need to be served.”
