Students rally for a DREAM

With hand-designed T-shirts and banners decorated in support of the DREAM Act, about 10 students gathered at the Friendship Walk to raise awareness about the measure.

The DREAM Act is an immigration piece of legislation where persons aged 16-35 may apply for citizenship if they have been residing in the U.S. for at least five years and graduated from high school.

The demonstrations were conducted on Monday and Tuesday, in time with the measure that will be voted on by the Senate today.

Most students were members of the Future Underrepresented Educated Leaders (FUEL), passing out fliers and talking with passersby about the importance of the DREAM Act.

Senior psychology major Erendira Aldana participated in the event as an ally.

“We’re just hoping to bring awareness today and have people call their representatives — people that they elected into these positions — to support the causes that we support as students,” she said.

Demonstrators rallied from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.

Psychology major Daniel Orozco, who passed out fliers, said, “The power lies within the student — that is why we are here, to reach out to the rest of the student population. It’s all in their hands.”
