On-campus gym to serve kinesiology students, elderly

A new exercise center for senior citizens and former clients of the Beach Wellness Center in the kinesiology department will open Feb. 1 in the Walter Pyramid, where Frog’s Fitness was formerly located.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) has partnered with the College of Health and Human Services to run the new facility.

After 15 years of serving Cal State Long Beach students, Frog’s Fitness closed last month as a result of decreased membership sales. Ayla Donlin, former general manager of Frog’s Fitness, told the Daily 49er last month that the gym’s closure may have been due to the opening of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center or a new LA Fitness on Bellflower Boulevard.

The programs were once provided by Frog’s Fitness Centers, but will now be run by the university.

A representative for OLLI, the on-campus educational center for persons 50 years of age or older, said senior citizens who are already enrolled in the Osher program can pay $25 per month or $40 per year for a membership to the center.

Kenneth Millar, dean of the College of Health and Human Services, said the university’s decision to keep the center was two-fold.

“The services to senior citizens are important as a community outreach,” Millar said. “There is also an internship opportunity for students in kinesiotherapy.”

Millar said the university bought the exercise equipment from Frog’s Fitness for a good price, since the center would need the equipment anyway for the kinesiology courses in need of a place to exercise.

Kinesiology offers such courses as cardio group exercise, weight training and conditioning, and yoga.

There will be 21 class sections using the center for the spring semester.
