CSULB event to promote energy-saving tips

Cal State Long Beach will host the seventh annual Green Campus Energy Efficiency Summit this weekend.

The invitation-only event is expected to draw about 160 attendees, including representatives from 16 college campuses, 75 paid student interns, CSULB faculty members, CSULB President F. King Alexander and Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster. It is CSULB’s first year involved in the program.

The event, titled Tools for a Greener Tomorrow, was organized by the Alliance to Save Energy. The agenda includes discussions on energy-saving tactics and hands-on training for those involved with the organization.

The program was funded by companies such as Southern California Edison, Pacific Electric and Sempre Energy, in addition to private donations.

“It took about six months to plan, and it cost over $50,000,” said Renee Lafrenz, project manager of Green Campus Program. “In 2010, Green Campus interns collectively saved their universities nearly 4,000,000 kWh of energy, nearly $485,000 and engaged over 28,000 people through their campus projects.”

Since then, the school has added 19 new vending machines that have saved the school $5,522 in energy, according to team manager of the program Allie Bussjaeger. She has been involved with the program since it began at Long Beach last year.

According to the ase.org website, there was a Green Campus competition last year called Do It In The Dark, featuring Residence Commons, Parkside Commons and the Residential Learning College dormitories. As a result, RLC students earned a night in the University Student Union for saving 22.75 percent of water and energy in the month of October, compared to September.

The summit begins Saturday at 8 p.m. and closes on Monday.
