Cal State Long Beach’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE) will continue an educational workshop series today as a means to encourage economic growth and contact with local businesses in Long Beach’s Anaheim Street corridor community.
Partnering with the Regional Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the CCE has put together workshops covering issues affecting local businesses including trash and graffiti abatement, façade and sign improvements, marketing, IRS outreach and access to capital and health care. The second of three workshops will be held today at Taco Loco from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Executive Director of CCE Juan Benitez said the workshops were established to “better connect businesses to our campus,” and “establish partnerships and relationships with regional trade commerce.”
The workshops will cover high priority concerns indicated in a survey of local businesses in the area.
The survey, funded by a $15,000 grant from Verizon and the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce Foundation, contacted over 130 businesses running from Atlantic Avenue to the Long Beach 710 Freeway, according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram.
Past speakers have included Cmdr. Josef Levy and Cmdr. Joseph Stilinovich of the Long Beach Police Department to discuss crime, and Seyed Jalali of the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency to discuss facade improvements.
“The overall goal is for these businesses to thrive and maintain their business,” Benitez said.
The CCE was established in 1998 and, according to its website, has raised more than half a million dollars for community engagement within the past three years.
Benitez said the goal of the CCE was to help students work in the community.
The workshops began last week and will conclude Feb. 24. Starting at 11:30 a.m. and going until 1 p.m. each Thursday, the workshops are held at Taco Loco at 1429 Magnolia Ave.
