CSULB ASI opposes Gov. Jerry Brown’s budget

The Associated Students Inc. Senate approved a resolution opposing the California governor’s proposed cuts to higher education on Feb. 16.

The proposed state budget aims to cut $500 million from the 23- campus California State University system.

According to senators, this would endanger classes, enrollment and the operation of ASI, which derives 71 percent of its budget from student fees.

Since the proposed budget cuts, the California State Student Association has also taken action.

CSSA President Christopher Chavez visited the state capitol to testify in front of the assembly of higher education committee on Feb. 15.

Chavez said that the battle against budget cuts will be difficult. He, however, intends to visit the capital several times in the future to continue the fight.

The approval of ASI’s resolution follows a trend of opposition to cuts on education.

If the proposed budget were passed by the state legislature, ASI would have less funding to provide to student organizations, spend toward events and use for hiring and other services.
