Former CSULB president to be honored

A public memorial honoring former Cal State Long Beach President and Long Beach congressman Steve Horn will be held at the Carpenter Center April 30.

The event, “A Celebration of Life,” is limited to the capacity of the center, which is 1,074, and those who want to attend must RSVP by phone or e-mail, according to the Alumni Association.

The association also said there will most likely be an audio/visual presentation about Horn’s life.

Horn was CSULB’s third president, serving for 18 years and expanding the campus in terms of academics as well as physical facilities. During his tenure, he created programs such as the student internship program, faculty development, student learning assistance, the senior citizen program, the Disabled Student Resources Center and the Honors Program.

After he stepped down as president, Horn remained active in the academic community. He continued to teach political science for four years. In 1993, he was elected to Congress. He was re-elected four times, serving for 10 years before retiring in 2003.

After he left Congress, he and his wife, Nini Horn, were recognized for their contributions to CSULB in the naming of the Steve and Nini Horn Center.

The event and parking is free but Toni Beron, associate vice president of University Relations, said that at this point in time, Horn’s family is still working on the specific details of the event and more information will be released as it becomes available.
