Deadline to register for CSULB Lavender Graduation extended

Cal State Long Beach students have until May 12 to register for the fifth annual Lavender Graduation Celebration, an event that is intended to complement the regular commencement ceremonies that will take place later in the week.

Graduating seniors, faculty and staff are welcome to participate in the supplemental graduation on May 23 in the University Student Union Ballroom A at 6 p.m.

The Lavender Graduation celebration is open to the entire CSULB community, including all “heterosexual allies,” Student Resource Center Coordinator of Student Life and Development Matt Cabrera said in an email.

As a unique event, the ceremony gives students a chance to connect with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender-identified graduates and allies of all backgrounds.

“LGBT and ally students should participate in the Lavender Graduation Celebration because it is a more intimate celebration and focuses on celebrating students’ accomplishments and their identities as LGBTQIA and ethnically-diverse students,” he said.

This event also allows students to celebrate with faculty, staff and administrators who identify with the LGBT community, he added.

According to Cabrera, the cultural graduation celebration acknowledges student achievements and contributions.

Partially funded through grants from Associated Students Inc.; the Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Inc.; and the Shoreline Frontrunners of Long Beach, a gay and lesbian running and walking club, the Lavender Graduation is also sponsored by Delta Lambda Phi, the Gay Straight Alliance, Queer Ink and the Student Life and Development Center.

There were 17 students registered as of May 5, Cabrera said. By extending the deadline, it will give more students an opportunity to register.

Students, faculty and staff can register online for the event on the Student Life and Development website by clicking on the “Register Now!” button.

The cost is $25 and should be addressed to the ASI Business Office. Only money orders and cash are accepted. The fee includes: A lavender stole, a rainbow tassel, five guest tickets and light refreshments following the celebration.

If graduates want to order additional items, they may be purchased after online registration at the Student Life and Development office.
