Cyclists to learn about bike safety and maintenance

Cal State Long Beach will be hosting three days of bicycle events to educate cyclists about bike safety and maintenance.

CSULB’s Sustainable Transportation Program is sponsoring a class to learn the basic rules of riding bikes on the street. The two-part class, Traffic Skills 101, will be held on May 18 in the Pyramid Annex from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on May 21 in Lot 20 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Bike to Work Day at CSULB is on May 19, and there will be a free pit stop on Palo Verde Avenue between Atherton Street and State University Drive from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. JAX Bikes mechanics will be on hand to do basic tune-ups and bike safety checks.

“This is education,” JAX Bikes General Manager Matt Gfell said. “When is education ever wrong? Students go to school to learn, so we’re going to be there to teach too.”

Gfell is also on campus for every second Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. performing bike safety checks on the quad.

Refreshments and cycling-related giveaway items, like T-shirts, will be offered at the pit stop. The mechanics available will show cyclists how to lubricate their bikes, check tire pressure, check the brakes and other necessary maintenance to make sure the bikes are safe to ride.

“We’re working towards making sure student’s, as well as faculty’s, bikes are working,” Gfell said.

The Traffic Skills 101 class will help people learn bike safety measures and traffic rules to ensure a safe ride. The first class is an informational session and the second is a hands-on session, in which participants will ride with a personal trainer.

Both sessions are free, but require advanced registration.
